Case Study
Corporate Finance Manager
"I joined Hall Morrice in 2003 after achieving a First Class Honours degree in
Accounting and Finance at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. During the third
year of my studies, I was on placement with a Glasgow-based accountancy firm,
who offered me a job after university. I decided that I wanted to pursue an
accountancy career in Aberdeen so I declined the offer and applied to Hall Morrice,
who offered to put me through three years of Chartered Accountancy training, which
I readily accepted. The majority of my training period was spent in the Audit and Accounts department.
After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, I moved into the Business Advisory section
and was seconded out to a client to set up their Aberdeen office. This was a fantastic
learning opportunity for me because it allowed me to see things from a client's
perspective and gave me practical experience of running a finance department. -

This contributed to my solid base of knowledge and experience and led to my promotion to Corporate Finance Manager in 2007. Working in accountancy has been a steep but exciting learning curve. I enjoy the sense of satisfaction gained from completing a deal. Having worked my way up through the ranks at Hall Morrice, I've developed with the firm
and it has given me a full understanding of how the business operates and its work
ethos. My job can involve long hours and working to tight deadlines, but it's also very rewarding."Tip for pursuing a career in Accountancy and Finance
"Gain as much experience as possible in different areas of business to increase
your knowledge base and to boost your appeal to potential employers." -

Tip for pursuing a career in Accountancy and Finance
"If possible, try and secure a placement at a small to medium-sized firm. In my experience, smaller accountancy outfits will give you plenty of opportunities to experience different areas of accountancy, whereas typically a larger firm will streamline you into one department."

Case Study
Business Advisory Manager
"I was introduced to Hall Morrice during the third year of my Accountancy and Finance Degree when I spent time with the team on my placement. On graduating in 2004, I was offered a permanent job with the firm which I eagerly accepted. Luckily, the year I spent with Hall Morrice on placement counted as a third of my three year Chartered Accountancy training, which meant that I finished my training in 2007, instead of 2008.After qualifying, I joined the Business Advisory Team and remain with them to this day. My job entails spending a significant amount of time working in clients' offices, examining their cash flow situations and making financial forecasts. I also work with the Corporate Finance department to review the financial circumstances of companies involved in large acquisition or merger deals.
-

Working in the Business Advisory Team is very fast-paced, and there's a lot of ad hoc work involved so you have to be quite adaptable. I really enjoy the social aspect of the job; getting out and about to meet clients and trying to find quick solutions to their problems."
Tip for pursuing a career in Accountancy and Finance
"Once you've gained your qualifications, the next most important thing to acquire for a career in accountancy is social skills. Working alongside clients on a regular basis is a major part of my job so it's important to build up good relationships and maintain communication and trust." -

After qualifying in 2008 I decided to remain in the Business Advisory department.
"I thoroughly enjoy working in the department; it's a very varied role and I've learned more during my time in this section than in any other role. I like building up a rapport with clients, and there's a huge amount of job satisfaction to be gained from putting a client's accounts in order and witnessing the finished result".
